Do you mean in the taskbar?? I think if you go to start/programs/accessories and either in communications, entertainment ( I think it's entertainment) or system tools, there should be a program there to change volume...Look around there

When you find the program there should be an option there "enable icon in system tray"

Default same problem

I have the same problem you have but I cannot find the sndvol32.exe file on my xp cd. What magic did you use to find it and how did you go about downloading it back onto your PC?
