Default Volume Control Icon or Graphic?

I have a 5y.o. Dell inspiron laptop, runningXP.It has a volume control and mute near the power on/off button.Sometimes I will mute things or lower volume for one reason or other.Problem is I don't have a convenient graphic to tell me the status of volume. If I'm on youtube or watching a flash or WMV and not hearing anything,I'm not sure where the problem is.To know what the computer itself is set at,conveniently of course, would be nice.Any ideas?

Start > Control Panel > Sound, Speech and Audio Devices > Sound and Audio Devices.

Then check the 'Place volume icon in the taskbak' box.

Apply then Ok.

Then just click once on the speaker in the taskbar to check the volume level.
