Default Vista Wireless So Slow (supposed to be fast)

Today, I installed Vista Home Basic 32-Bit OEM on this machine:
-AMD 64 X2 4200+
-2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 RAM
-256MB MSI 8600GT OC Twin Turbo
-(New) PCI Belkin Wireless-G Card
So far, for the most part it is running fine, despite it being a tad clunkier than XP. Anyways, my problem is the internet. It runs fast downloading large files from the internet, but when I am trying to open pages (using Firefox), it takes a long time-even longer than my old Dell USB 1.1 Wireless-B card. On top of that, when I open Pidgin, it takes forever to open, so long that it usually crashes. If I get it to work, then I have to deal with having to reconnect to some of my accounts.
What should I do?

Have you gone to the manufacturer's site for the wireless card to make sure you have the latest drivers?
