Default Vista Problems

I installed Vista today and since then, everything has gone south. After Vista installed all of the required updates, it asked me to reboot my machine... naturally I did. My machine shut down and then started back up again... nothing out of the ordinary. Then, right after the loading screen, vista went into the chkdsk utility and DELETED a ton of files. Eventually vista loaded the welcome screen and asked me to enter my password. I entered my password and was on my account. Everything looked as it should. I double clicked the internet explorer icon on my desktop and instead of the program launching, vista popped up a message that said "searching for file." Curious, I opened my computer and navigated to program files and to my surprise, nothing was there!! VISTA HAD DELETED ALL OF MY PROGRAMS!! What the @#$%! What on earth happened here? Has anyone heard of anything like this?
