Default vista hardware problem

I'm always having a problem with my USB devices on vista. When I put in mp3 player it searches windows updaate for drivers then says it cnt find so I can't even use the basic mass storage mode and there are no drivers for my mp3 player I also have this problem with game controller iphone and PCMCIA cards and even printer sometimes. I have tried most of these devices on about three computers and laptops running vista. I never had this problem on xp does anyone no what the problem could be?

I. Have plugnplay enabled in bios and I. Can't get drivers for things like my usb flash drive which does not have drivers. It does say installing device in system tray and recognizes the device and shows the name. I'm having this problem on vista pc n laptop
