Default vista bsod

Ever since i got vista on my new laptop ive been having problems. sometimes its something little like utorrent not closing, and it has either sorted its self or ive found a fix. over the past few days ive been getting bsods randomly, then the computer restarts and tells me that there was an unexpected shutdown. the problems and support thing or whatever its called is pretty useless, and i tried viewing the report thing, but theres no error codes.
just wondering what it could be/how i can find out.
sometimes firefox just doesnt want to open, and limewire wont close. random problems like that which are sorted with a restart. my friend told me it could be my fingerprint reader software eating ram as i had an old and crappy version. i installed the new one and i seem to be getting less problems (may or may not be related), but i still get these bsods).

any ideas?
Laptop spec: ASUS X53E, i5 2430m 2.4ghz, 3gb ram, 320gb hdd, intel hd graphics, usb 3.0
