Default virtual machine

Is it possible to boot a bootable HD (has XP in it) in a virtual machine?

I'm pretty sure that virtual machines can only boot virtual hard drives. Why do you need to boot this hard drive in a virtual machine? Is putting it in a USB external enclosure and booting from that not an option?
But I'm trying, Ringo. I'm trying real hard... to be the Shepherd.
