Default video ram

ok, i think i have asked this question somewhere before, but i never really got an answer. what exactly is video ram? like on my video card, i have 256 mb of video ram. what does it do?? kind of a noobish question, but im confused.

Compaq Presario SR1750NX
AMD Athlon 64 3500 2.3Ghz
ATI Radeon 256mb
1.5gb Ram
19" Samsung LCD

In a nutshell, the video ram sends two streams of data, one to refresh and update the image being shown, and the other to communicate with the CPU and change data about the image.
