Depends what games you will be playing! Both the 4870 and the 4850 are good cards, but they arnt exactly mid range (especially the 4870)

It all depends on the games you will be playing, and the resolution you will be playing them at.

i think the ATI mid range are the 46xx series, and the nvidia is the 9600 series.

before i gave the card away i was at 1280 x 1024 on a 17in. I goin to get another monitor in by January or so a 22in and i would like to run it at 1920 x 1080..as far as game I'm currently not playing any as i have no time but i am going to get into video editing....

I would get a 4870 if you are gonna run resolutions that high. I picked one up myself and it was a big improvement over my 9600GT.

Is there any specific card you guys would recommend? I'm not all that up to date on video cards. (I plan to learn though)

The 48xx series are high end ATi Cards, all of which I have heard good things about

the 9600GT is nVidia's mid-range card, which is OK, but at those resolutions im not too sure...

the 9800GT is nVidia's higher-mid range card, which is good, and might be OK for that resolution (Allthough im not really an expert..)

the nVidia 260 and the 280 are nVidia's high end cards.... But a lot of people prefer the ATi when you get into prices that high...

As i said, I'm not an expert, so this could be totally wrong!

you need to specify what price point you consider "mid-range"...

a 4850 can be had for $140 (mid-range imo) and a 4870 for $230 (low-high end), the 4870 is the one I would choose right now, these prices are open box prices at Newegg, but all that means is that you'll have to download the drivers which is usually advisable anyway, most driver discs that come with the cards aren't worth two squirts...

22" is 1680x1050, I think the HD 4850 will be fine for that res. I play at 1600x1200 and my HD 4850 is perfect for me.
