Default very slow puter

i have just moved a lot of files onto an ext hd to free up some space, i was hoping that this would speed up things but if anything it seems slower, very lethergic, takes ages to open progs and move from one page to another on the web. i remember someone suggesting a prog that you couls run and it would give you a great list of things that it found on your hd(s) then you can show the list on here and get some feedback, any ideas please
thanks
Bill

This program is built into XP and Vista, you can access it by clicking start > run > msconfig
