Default USB HDD problem

Hai friends

I have a 160gb Signature mini External USB hdd . When it is working It disconnect regularly and produce a " tick tick " sound. I can not access the drive with out restarting . After restarting some times it take a long time to connect. What is the problem please help me

I have 2 questions for you:

1. Does the USB cord have 2 ports on the end of it split?
2. Are you plugging it in the front ports of your computer or the back ports (assuming its a desktop)?

Usually on external drives it is the usb interface that goes bad.
When all else fails...Ham Radio!

I still have the same old HP DV9700T laptop I've had for years...still kickin'
