Default USB HD Booting

Two HP computers.............
One desktop (m7177C) and one laptop (dv6000t). The desktop boots Linux Mepis just fine from an external hard drive but the same USB HD on the laptop it doesn't even show up in the boot options.

What's the issue here?
I checked the bios settings and have USB hard drive selected as a boot option but when I hit Esc on boot (to show boot options) all that shows up is the internal HD and the CDROM.

Any help appreciated..................Thanks.

Its something to do with the BIOS, have you checked for newer BIOS versions?
