Try a different usb port.

If it does the same thing, find whatever has the big ! in device manager and post the name here.

Ehh... sorry I'm on a linux netbook because my Windows machine crapped out on me.

Are these the front or rear usb's or all of them doing this?

just the two sides. well the only ones actually. it recognizes it but then is says that "usb device not recognized". might it be a hardware problem? because my brother overloaded one of the breakers at home and it went off. after that, this started happening...

Could be.

Try moving the internal cable to a different header on the motherboard.

Or is this a laptop?

Does it have a battery in it?

I ask because if it does, there is almost no way the breaker being thrown could have hurt it. If not, then its still incredibly unlikely.

Try to boot off a live CD, or a flash drive and see what happens.

Not sure if this will help but its worth a try,

Go back to device manager and under Universal Serial Bus controllers find all the "USB Root hub's" and uninstall all of them. Restart your computer and see if that helps(it will automatically reinstall all of those hubs).
