Default Upgrading hard drives. Cloning?

Is it possible to take an old hard drive in working condition and clone it to a new one and put the cloned new drive right back in the computer and boot from it? I have switched boot drives around in rigs before to test the drive so I assume it would work. It would save the trouble of downloading all the updates and drivers for the computer. But would that violate some Microsoft policy?

I had assumed it would work but I am still concerned about it possibly violating the license regulations.

As long as you retire the other copy you're still in bounds of the license.

Make sure to have a backup of all your files in case something goes wrong.

Most of the time it is just a matter of getting a new hard drive into a computer because I am repairing it to sell it so I don't have any files at risk in the event I wipe the drive instead of cloning it. Thanks
