I have a gateway mx3702 with 2 GB of RAM and a 320 GB hard drive. I have the stock 1.6 GHz processor. the specs are here:

http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/Q106/Bishop/2905898Rsp2.shtml

so i currently have the intel core duo T2050.

i actually replaced the motherboard awhile back so know the exact model. it is a 40GAB1230-C300. it's specs for a processor are:

Supported: Intel® Yonah Celeron® M
Package: Socket uFCPGA 478 pin
FSB: 533 MHz

For more of the mobo specs you can go here and scroll down to the "Compatible Specification":

So my question is what is the most powerful processor I can upgrade to with this motherboard? Some research led me to believe it might even be possible to utilize a core 2 duo processor.

anyway, thanks in advance. i would just like to know the most powerful processor for sure as my own research had people on the net saying different processors.

Upgrading the processor in a laptop is more complicated than it's worth. Sometimes the BIOS doesn't support the new chip or the cooling proves to be inadequate.

ok, thanks for the info.

just to know for future reference, is upgrading a CPU generally "more trouble than it's worth" for only laptops or for desktops also?

anyone else have any thoughts?

Only for laptops. With desktops many chips come with a heat-sink that is powerful enough for every-day use so you don't need to worry about frying anything.
