Okay, we got this laptop and it has XP on it. Well, we have to do all the registering and stuff for it, so I'm wanting to remove XP and do a clean install of Windows 2000. Problem is, I'm having problems trying to remove it! I've had very little experience with XP and I've heard dozens of methods to remove it, none of which have worked for me. I don't know if XP does this normally or what, but it's on a C and E partion and I can't format them. I've been told I can go to the Add/Remove programs on the control panel, but that doesn't work.

Message I got when I tried to tried "format E:"

Format cannot run because the volume is in use by another process.

I could not dismount it.

I tried formatting the C: and I got a message saying it could not format it.

How are you trying to format? from within Windows? if so that won't work because windows is running on the pc

You've probably also got a "Recovery Partition there as well.

What brand of laptop?

You could boot to an XP cd and delete the partition then format it then install 2K but be aware you'll have to find 2K drivers (if they exist) for all your hardware that requires them
