Trouble burning Data DVD's

I'm running Windows XP Service Pack 2 and I'm having trouble burning data dvd's using nero essentials 8, I'm using a samsung shs222 writer. Simulation works fine and burning CD's isn't a problem but when I try to burn a full DVD it goes a lot slower than it should. If I'd actually waited I think it would've taken around 8 hours. The computers specs are;
AMD Athlon X2 4000+
1GB RAM
320GB Hard drive

Also the power supply is a value make from Maplin, its 350w.

Don't you have to format a DVD on XP?
I know you have to on Vista.

I like software that doesn't have a lot of frills. Simple software that works well, and if it is free, all the better.
