Default Thermalright Ultra-120

Just wondering about the lapping option on this for an extra $19. Is it needed and how hard is it to do myself? Thermalright

Also will this paste work well with this?

lapping isn't "needed". It does increase the cooling performance somewhat. Lapping isn't hard to do. Just a little time consuming. Here's a nice lapping kit with a guide: SVC.com - Premium Heatsink Lapping kit. But then, for the price of the kit, the lapping option looks like a good deal.

The ARCTIC COOLING MX-2 Thermal Compound is a very good choice.

If you've ever owned a TRUE, you'd see why so many people lap them. Thermalright's heatsinks are awesome, but their bases are meh.

Ok, thanks a lot for the replies guys. Seeing as the lapping kit is $12 I think I will go ahead and pay the $19 and let them do it.

Agreed, mine was like just terrible. The TRUE's performance is pretty mediocre unless it's lapped. Even the TRUE black isn't any better, you would have thought that if they are going to make people pay extra just for a colour, the base would be at least a little better.
