Switching between hdd's

No!!!.......don't format!! You will lose all the data on the laptop drive!!

Just plug the laptop drive into the new computer and follow the instructions I gave. You don't need the laptop, the point is to adapt the old hard drive to the new computer so it needs to be plugged into the new computer so vista will install the drivers needed for the devices in the new pc.

BUT DON'T FORMAT!!

If I wanted to install Linux, would it be the same method, I was thinking, it wouldn't make much sense to have vista twice; plus I don't have an installation cd for vista. I have one for my Acer and one for dell, but none for HP. I don't want to shell out the insane price they charge for the not so great os either.
