you need a sound card not a video card one with a SPDIF output is the best way to go about doing this like this card
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16829111001

the SPDIF cable can plug right into your audio receiver and you can get all 7.1 of surround goodness

if you dont have an audio receiver you can use 7.1(or 5.1) computer speakers to get the sound like these ones

5.1

7.1

thats pretty vague, what kind of onboard sound do you have? and how many connectors and what colors are they on the back? you can do what rudster says, but if you have a budget tell me this stuff, if not go digital with rudster's suggestions

ENVIRONMENTALLY IRRESPONSIBLE!

Pros: None.
Cons: Way overpackaged: Environmentally damaging. Hollow about 50% designed to fool us into thinking we're getting more. More trees cut down yes. More product, no.

LOL he gave it one egg for that.

if you do decide use your onboard sound card dont expect the quality to be too good. for speakers get at least 50 watts combined power AT LEAST i got 2 50 watt speakers from my dad and he let me borrow his receiver and that thing packs a punch for just 100 watts and no sub. it about as loud as my ole 2.1 setup only 1\16 of the way up on the volume

i was just wondering cause the vid card had the hdtv hook ups...i didnt think it was really gonna work, cause im kinda old school so i expected the sound card that would use surround sound to have those big audio/video plugs, you know what i mean

onboard sound card is: 6-channel (5.1) high-definition audio that should be ok...but il let you guys tell me if it is or not lol
