any suggestions to the build im thinking of would be good.

basically i wanted something that would have a bit of longevity, fairly futureproof and be able to play most games without too much hassle.

CPU: phenom ii x4 970 @ 3.5ghz

MOTHERBOARD: GIGABYTE GA-890FXA

HARDDRIVES: 1: ocz vertex 2 40gb ssd
2: samsung spinpoint 1tb @7200 sata2

GPU: evga GTX460 1gb

CASE: antec 300 gaming case

PSU: coolermaster extreme power plus 550W

RAM: kingston 4gb ddr3 @1600mhz

any input would be appreciated as this is my first serious build

You don't need a quad core for gaming, save a heap of money and downgrade to an AMD Athlon II X3 445 or something, and purchase a motherboard with a core unlocker, unlock to 4 cores, OC to 3.5GHz. I have, so I am effectively running a processor worth a lot more money than what I paid.

Why?
Most games only use two cores on your processor, very very few use 3 and games using 4 cores are almost non-existant.

You can also OC that GPU you chose to a 470.

Puchase a Western Digital Caviar Black/Blue/Green HDD. They are good, black would be best.

If the RAM you chose is Value RAM, don't buy it. I did and it was a mistake. (CONSTANT BSOD's)

Everything else looks good, I would just change what I mentioned I think.

Looks like a nice build without spending a ton of money. 4GB of memory is a nice start, but with today's prices, 8GB would be a good deal and give you a bit more overhead with some of the newer games.
