Default Steam

Does anyone know exactly what this program is? I have the ATI Radion HD 3870 512MB graphics card and this was what it downloaded when i installed football manager 2009(1st game on this pc) and that is the only place i can access the game is through that program, its like a libary and you can d/l demos and media files, any help?

Steam is an online program. Kind of like Xbox Live. It helps you connect to your friends or find games on the internet.

It's a way to fight piracy, I guess. I can't play Half Life 2 without opening up Steam first. You don't have to be online. Just think of it as a launcher.

Exactly, it's a good way to fight piracy, but you can download non-steam versions of games. It's very difficult to get online though, but it's possible.
