Looking for help to build a gaming rig

I've been thinking about it for a year or so now, and I've finally decided to start. So with that, I have started the research needed to build my gaming rig. As of right now, since I'm still in the research phase, I am pretty much open to all suggestions in all stages of the process. I have an idea of what I want, but like I said, I'm open to suggestions.

What I want
-At least 12 gigs DDR3 Ram, option to upgrade to 16 or more
-Intel processor (i7) and ATI Graphics
-Top of the line or near top of the line GPU, with the ability to crossfire in the future
-Maybe RAID capability
-SSD primary, platter secondary
-Sweet looking case with Green LEDs
-Blu-ray AND DVD capability
-Audio ports, headphone jack
-Mixture of USB 2.0 and 3.0
-Maybe Firewire
-Budget is $2000 +/- 10%

At this stage of the process, here are the questions I have so far:
-What features exist for mother boards? Is there a place where I can find a list of all these features so I can check off what suits my needs?
-I fear over heating, so I want the best cooling out there. What does that entail?
-What does PCI mean and what does it refer to? What does Mobo mean?
-What else should I be considering/looking at?

What I am hoping to get out of this thread:
1. A main go-to resource for my research
2. Answers to my questions as I come across them
3. Brand opinions and part selection advice
4. Advice on what to do and what not to do

If you have anything relevant, please post it! This is my first rig, and any experiences you all might have that you are willing to share can help me. While I don't necessarily want you to select the parts and build the rig for me, I do want guidance. There is just a lot out there for a nub to handle, and I need assistance.
