There are three types of standby states: S1 (consumes 5-30W), S3 (consumes <5W), and S4 (Hibernation)... S1 is a standby state in which the processor only stops - all other hardware continues running. S3 is a standby state in which context is saved in memory (not to HD) and everything powers down into a deep sleep state.
If your computer suspends to S1 state, it isnt bad because everything is still running. Waking from an S3 state has one negative. When your comp wakes from this state, a surge of power runs through all the hardware to start it up. Over time this may cause problems in the future because it causes stress to the hardware everytime it powers up.
