Default Sound and the strange iron happening...

This isn't so much a problem as a nuisance.

I can't seem to control left/right front and left/right rear speaker volumes to different points using the Windows controls in Multimedia, after selecting Quadrophonic Speakers.

I.e, I only have 2 sliders to affect both in stereo.

Does any one know why this could be?

My dads external 250GB hard drive stopped working, and must have happened 2 days ago after I dropped the iron on it from a distance of about 1/2 metre. Its a pretty heavy iron, but I'm surprised it killed it completly.
The device cannot be recognised through USB, and just moving the USB wire causes the device to cut out.

I'm thinking maybe the USB internals could be faulty?

He has a back up with a mate luckily, as they swapped over and backed data up from each others, but I'm really really put out that such an expensive device could be stopped (Its in a hard metal casing) by an iron which just litterally half missed and bounced off...
