Default Sound Problem

When I watch videos on youtube and similiar sites the video starts out fine but as it goes on the sound and video separate. The sound can't seem to keep up with the video ex: someone knocks on a door in the video but 2 seconds later the knocking sound occurs. I am running on a windows 98 operating system. If anyone can help with this problem I would greatly appreciate it.
