Default Sound Card Question

Ok, so I have used onboard sound forever and have never gone into the realm of sound cards so I had a question. My mic on my headset has this really high pitch noise in the background and I was wondering if this has to do with my soundcard. I'm thinking about buying a Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer to hopefully eliminate this noise. Will this sound card help eliminate my mic noise?
