I'd suggest installing XP or a Linux distro such as Ubuntu (which is free), because all the Windows bar 2000 and XP are more vulnerable to threats and problems. Plus, they aren't as supported as much, as they're...well, old. Also, seeing as how you're having a complicated problem at the moment, i'd think that it would be a good decision.
I had problems with a Windows 98 laptop a few months ago, but when i installed XP on it, the problems disappeared, and like i said, it's more supported, has less problems etc.
