I always thought it did because it is scanning the drive almost all the time for internal errors, by doing some sort of thing... So I just imagined it as some sort of Antivirus scan thats always scanning.

Well, it's not so much "scanning" as it is "watching." It keeps records of information as the hard drive is being used. Hmmm....

Yeah...

It wouldn't slow down I guess if the hard drive was built with a buffer to handle this scanning or watching thing, as I guess all it looks at is power coming in, and data written to what regions, etc
