Default Slow Laptop

I think there must be something wrong with it, I have formatted it numerous times and it still runs xp slowly. I takes for ever to start up and to open program, it almost dies when I try to multitask. It has a Pentium 4 2.4ghz, 1GB RAM, 64MB Radeon IGP 340M. XP ran very nicely on mt old PIII 700MHz dell with 512MB RAM. Anyone got any ideas what might be wrong, or how to boost the performance. Thanks.
