Simple Question. I have two monitors I would like to hook up. The tower only has one

The monitors themselves don't need USB ports at all. The display adapter plugs into one of the computer's USB ports and then provides a port for your second monitor. Your original monitor will stay plugged in where it is now.

Once everything is connected you'll have the ability to decide (via software) whether to duplicate or extend the displays. Duplicate would show the same content on both whereas extend would treat both as 1 wide monitor so you could have your browser open on the left monitor while you have a spreadsheet open on the right monitor.
