Well i've gone thru the problem u say u have but couldn't catch the real issue out of it.
But just a peice od advice. Actually SP2 is indeed really good provided u install it correctly and if it works fine.
Again, if u have a pirated version of any of the MS products in ur drive it might turn bad. Beware!!
But If u are sure to install it but have slight fear just set a restore point b4 the installation and give it a try. ( again no 100% gaurantee that u might get back to the restore point)
It provides a good security when going online and is more capable than any other pop up blockers.
Go for it and see it urself.
