i got a Intel Pentium 4 2.00ghz
20gb hard drive
480ram
xp home

and was thinking is this capable of being a server for a game
such as counter strike

and would need setting it up

I guess so, but you will need XP proffesional for a server, XP home is no good for doing stuff like that on. I made a server on a Dell SX260 (not very good i might add lol) before so I would asume you would be ok with it on you're comp ;)

I can run Counter-Strike dedicated servers and play at the same time on my machine. Is that what you're planning on doing? I think if you ran the DS by istelf on that pC you would be ok, but it could be better. Usually people recommend at least 512MB RAM and probably a higher freq on the processor. AMDs are generally better at these things than intels, at least last time I checked, but your's will probably work.

You need to download the hldsupdatetool.exe from Valve and run it in a command prompt, follow instructions and update cstrike, set up your server.cfg file, then look somewhere to get instructions on making a shortcut to launch the server in a command promt interface. Yeah, it took me a long time to figure it out.
