I may be an amateur, but I'm also a person who knows the meaning of money. If I can save money, I'd like to do it.
I think all the questions you asked are pretty self-explanatory, or else were explained earlier in this thread. Why would anyone want a RAID 1? So if the HD fails, there's a mirror. I don't get this software/hardware thing.
