A server can be used for many things.

Hosting webpages
Hosting chatrooms
Hosting other people's webpages
Becoming your own napster
Hosting a video game server
Hosting your own video game's server.
Hosting a database server with information

so forth, so forth.

when you build one, make sure that you get a mobo that can support dual cpu's, my shop's server has dual athlon mp2800's and it works well. be careful about server HD's though, your probably gonna need to get SCSI hd's, if you do get fujitsu's they are the best, (15,000 rpm) but they cost like 400 US or so for 73gb, so watch out. but if you can afford them, they really fly, they so own my seagate B-cuda with NCQ it's not even funny.
