A Friend gave me a pile of computer parts,i was going through there this afternoon, and i stumbled across a brand new (Boxed) Adaptec SCSI Controller (Made in 2000),and also a IBM 10,000 RPM,18.6 Gb Hdd SCSI.I was wondering wether it's worth installing windows XP onto that, and using my exising hdd just for storage and the SCSI drive for Windows.Would it be worth it?

I would give it a go, if your not happy with it then just change it back. Dont forget to get hold of the driver for when you do a clean install.

Ok,I have Benchmarked them......

Ok Maxtor Diamond plus 9 80gb ATA/133 Hdd

Specs:

Interface IDE/EIDE
Spindle Speed 7200 RPM
External Data Transfer Rate 133 MBps
Seek Time 9 ms
Buffer Size 2 MB

Vs.

IBM ULTRASTAR 36LZX HARD DRIVE

Iterface Ultra160 SCSI
SPINDLE SPEED 10000 RPM
DATA TRANSFER RATE Ultra160 SCSI 160 MB/sec (sync)
AVERAGE SEEK TIME 4.9ms
BUFFER 4096KB

Even Before i benchmark them...I Think i know who is going to win......

I Used Disk Bench 2.5.0.3 for my tests and also HD Tune (Both freeware)

Ok,Test 1:

File Creating
------------
maxtor: 100mb File
Time:5547ms
Transfer rate:17.3 mb/s

IBM: 100mb File
Time:6312ms
Transfer rate:15.2 mb/s

Then i updated drivers....

IBM:100mb File
Time: 4000ms
Transfer rate 24.5 mb/s

test 2:Read File:

maxtor 100mb File
Time:3641m/s
Read Rate 26.7mb/s

IBM: 100mb File
time: 203 M/s
Read rate 431 mb/s

I wasnt expecting it to tread that good.....

Test 3: File Copy

From Maxtor to IBM: 100mb file
Time:11s
Transfer rate: 8.7mb/s

From IBM to Maxtor:

Time 1609m/s
Trasfer rate: 59.6 mb/s

test 4: Benchmarking

Maxtor:

Average transfer rate: 46.4
Average CPU Usage 6.4%
Acsess time 14.3ms
Health:Ok

I couldnot test the IBM Because HD Tune wont see my SCSI Hdd....

After those test...I Think i will be installing Windows XP onto the Ibm Hdd and see what happens. At the moment it takes 1:14 for my computer to boot (From when i hit the power button to when my desktop shows).I'll post how long it takes for the iBM to boot when it's done installing.

Ok,i installed XP Onto it,Windows bootsa in 55 seconds but the whole system is just alot more responsive and noticebaly quicker too.Thx!
