Screen Resolution Change at Startup

Hi I have windows XP service pack 3 running on my computer.
Sometimes when I boot up the Computer, when reaching the log on screen, it changes to a resolution that isn't supported by my 15" Dell LCD monitor. Sometimes it works just fine and puts out 1024x768 and sometimes video becomes really tall and thin smearing the image. My graphics card is an nVidia 6600GT.

At boot up the system is using a generic driver for the card. The graphics drivers are a part of what is loading at boot up. When the drivers get loaded the system switches over to them. In your case I'd venture the setting are wrong in the drivers or the driver is out of date. Check to see if you have the current drivers for your card. You can get them either from the company that made the card or from Nvidia direct.
If after checking all that, the card continues to act up you may have a bad card. The 6600 line pricing has come way down. But if you shop around you can find 8400 or 8800 cards for a good price.
