Right clic on your desktop, properties, settings: its' all there just change settings to see which one is appropriate for you.

Yea, and make sure you dont go too high. Especially if you don't know what your monitor can support.

Try to go between 80x600 or 1024x768 (the norm), and check if those are okay. Most monitors can also support 1152x864, but i'd never try anything higher than that, not on a 17inch.
