True. But I think a E7200 2.53GHz would be plenty horsepower, just about the same as the E8200 and its about $45 cheaper. Just trying to keep costs as low as possible, as the OP would like to have it.

yea that build is way too much. you could get away with windows xp, 1-2gb ram, a very cheap gpu, 2.0ghz c2d (at most) and then just a cheap 80gb hdd or something.

Im from the UK so cant help you build one, but youve just got to decide how much power and space you will need. Something like that ^ should be fine imo.

I didnt mean that his build was suitiable - I agree that it would be quite a heafty overkill! I meant I couldnt really design a build for him without first knowing what kind of programming he was doing.

The programming is whatever classes I have to take. Theres C++, Java, PASCAL. And I think a few more but I cant remember right now.

I think if you're going dual-core ditch Intel. Look at my sig. The cost for everything excluding monitor and OS was $400. I have to say it's been doing me well so far. You won't need anything higher than what I have for programming; take my word for it (roughly 2 years of programming under my belt). Unless you'll be compiling a program with 1000 code files and 3d-rendered images this should fit you very well.

I've had little to no spare time. Plus, we don't have a big enough of a team to do anything effective yet. We need at least 20 people WORKING on it. I don't think the Project forums has that many signed up. We might have to step it down to a more manageable program for this little amount of people.

i asgree with joga honestly is spending $120 on a cpu just to read a few emails and stuff really money well spent ?
i would advise looking at an intel CPU cos they are loads cheaper and tbh in office tasks you arent going to notice much difference between a $120 C2D or a $50-$70 AMD dual core chip

and depending on what programming language you are using i doubt the compiler will be that system intensive
