That's not so slow! You have never used a 9600 baud modem have you! ;)

[edit] 9600 baud is super slow

Umm, you should be happy. My DL speed is 2Mb/s and my UL is practically nill. And I pay $60/mo. Yeah.

As for the router, I just bought a new one after my old linksys just started to finally piss me off enough (was dropping DHCP connection AT LEAST once a week). Plus, I really wanted wireless N for when I get my laptop so when I come home from college to visit, I don't have to be wired and I can have full range and speed.

This is what I got. At the time, it was free shipping with a free wireless n usb adapter. But I think I paid a bit more for it.

Here is what I'm using:

TRENDnet TW100-S4W1CA Router $21.99

D-Link DWL-G700AP High Speed Wireless Access Point $56.99

Cheap, but they work flawlessly. I had the router for experimentation when we switched providers. I installed it temporarily to get us up and running and have never changed it because it works so well. I used a separate wireless access point because the router is downstairs, I wanted the access point in the second story attic.

I bought this Linksys Router: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...=linksys+router&type=product&id=1194054018722 and it sucked. I had a hard time getting the internet to work after spending like 2 hours trying to get it to work. Talked to customer service, and they told me it was a firmware update issue. Anyway, it worked for like a day and then kept dropping connections (next room over btw). After a few days I packed it up, returned it to the store and got this Belkin: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...outer&lp=1&type=product&cp=1&id=1218007084648 took me 30 mins to setup and its been working flawlessly since.

Also when the node you're on gets busy you're going to have some slow downs.

If you want to repeat the signal you might want to try this. I used a bunch of them at the hotel in North Carolina. Lot of bang for the buck.

I use this router: http://www.tp-link.com/products/product_des.asp?id=35
Works great and user friendly. And insanely cheap price. I think I gave 45 dollars for it.

Whatever you go with i would recommend linksys anyday. my router (WRT54G, the old one :) ) has never given me problems ever. I once tried to set up a friend D-Link and it was nearly impossible. i had sooo many headaches. Linksys ftw

what a 9600 baud modem?? where could we get one?

I could send you one. I keep all kind of old obsolete stuff. I still have my first computer, the timex/sinclair 1000

Super slow compared to anything commonly used today.

It's kind of ironic. A modem is a modulator/demodulator. A "DSL Modem" isn't really a modem because is is all digtal, same with a cable "modem." I guess it has just become a common name for the device.
