Default Ripping DVDs

I have no experience whatsoever in copying DVDs to my hard drive. Can anyone lend me a hand with it? BTW: I own all of the DVDs, I just wish to put them on my portable device. I know that's legal atleast.

Is there a particular DVD ripping software I should download? Or is it something you do manually

Download and try supper dvd ripper, this will convert the DVD format to DivX, AVI, VCD or SVCD etc. It takes time, but works well. Just for making simply backups use DVD shrink 3.1 (makes perfect copies) or if you just want to rip them to your hard drive and watch later try DVD decrypter.
