Can you reinstall Windows XP without losing files on your hard drive or do you have to back up everything?

in the install, you can choose to keep all the files. it is, however, not recommended, especially if all your stuff is on the same partition.

You can just pop the cd in and when it autoruns there's an option to simply copy over the existing installation. That way you keep all your files, programs and stuff.

Yes it does. Thank you. I just wish I didn't have to reinstall everything. A headache.

although it won't help you much right now, this may help you in the future. if you get a disk imaging software program such as true image 9.0, then you can make a disk image after you reinstall windows and put all of your other software loaded onto the hard drive. then, whenever you want to, you can quickly restore that image, completely wiping your hard drive of anything else, and putting it back to that prestine state.
