Software usually won't work for bad drives. Is it just having write errors or is it clicking?

use hirens boot cd, you can boot in to a "Mini" version of windows and then copy and paste the files off the hard-drive

Another option: invest in a device such as.. Newegg.com - VANTEC CB-ISATAU2 SATA/IDE to USB 2.0 Adapter

I have one and it works great. It supports SATA and IDE so. Just hook up the bad drive (given the drive can still read/write) to a good computer and copy over files.

If it's just a virus, then no real special software is needed. You can just plug the drive into another computer, scan the drive for viruses and copy things over.
