Default Recording sound with 'line in'

Is there a way to record sound with the line in port on the back of my computer? I set line in as the default recording device, but no recording programs pick up any sound from it. There's obviously a way to do it... wouldn't make sense to put a port on a computer that couldn't be used for anything...

Thanks in advance.

You should also make sure the program is set to record from Line In.
Some programs allow you to set this, for instance, Audacity.

Well, I tried out Audacity and set it to record from line in but it still didn't work, so I tried it on my older computer and it worked fine. And it turns out, all sound recording programs work with line in on my old computer lol. I have no idea why the line in is retarded and won't work on my newest computer, but oh well. Thanks for the help man.
