Does anyone know where I can get some really cheap computer parts online. I mean like mobo and cpu for like under 50 bucks. I am thinking about creating a business where I build computers for people that are less fortunate then myself and sell them for like $200 and under.

Any ideas that you guys and girls have would be great. I need all the input that I can get right now.

Cheers!

Actually, your best bet is to get donations of used stuff, or buy some used stuff. Use craigslist maybe and see what you can get fro free or cheap. If you buy new you will most definitely pay more than $200 just for single system. The cheapest mobo on Newegg is probably the socket 478 Biostar if that's still there.

EDIT:
Ok so I was wrong.

mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130064
Probably will still spend over $200 just fort the parts though.

EDIT again: made one fast w/ cheap parts and came up to $190. That's something I wouldn't use though as it's got pretty much cheapo parts.

case/psu 25$

comes out to 182 or 175 before tax/shipping. (depending if you get the 512 or 1gb)
keep in mind this is a very low end computer though.

also, you'll have to be installing linux or something because the operating system is a real killer in terms of money, 100 dollars a pop for vista, i don't think it's possible to get mass parts for sub 100$ computers.

this is just an example, there are lots of other combinations out there you can try. I would advise that if you do go experimenting like that though you stick with am2 or skt 775 platforms since ddr ram is considerably more expensive than ddr2 ram, which means alot when making these low cost pcs. also it's hard to find skt 939 sort of parts nowadays, with the line being discontinued and everything.

All that stuff is great, and thanks a lot. However, i am also looking for like wholesale websites, or websites that sell in bulk, and have lower rates on parts and stuff.

Cheers!

$2 more for an 80GB HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136195

That CPU listed below is OEM, which means you have to get your own heatsink. Cheapest I could find for AM2 on newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835186019

All in all, is it really worth it since you make no profit from these systems? You may actually loose money since you still have to pay shipping. FYI, Newegg has low prices as compared to other places you can buy from.

I'm still sticking with the fact that you should get older stuff for free or cheap like I do and rebuild the parts to make working systems. People less fortunate that you probably won't have $200 to spend on a system anyway, and if they don't have a system now, I think they could be content with a P3 or similar system... I resell all my systems on craigslist for a cheap price and still make profit since I get a lot of free stuff.

If his business really takes off though (which I hope it does), he wouldn't be able to match demand if he has to go scrounging around for out dated, cheap, free parts, it'd be a really iffy business.

Thanks everyone for your input. It is really helpful. :) I am just starting to think about this business. The whole idea of owning and running a business is really foreign to me. I understand what you are saying Jesusfrk611, can u run XP on a P3?

As for where I would be getting parts, I have some contacts at local colleges. I am hoping that maybe I would be able to take their old and out dated systems off their hands and put them to good use.

wee493 you have a good point, I was thinking about offering 3 different OS's. Those being XP, Vista, and Ubuntu. I guess that I could offer Mac OS X, but i have heard about some problems with compatibility with non Mac hardware. I do believe that for the next 3 or so years most people will be able to get away with XP though. Would I have to buy mutiple copies of XP, and Vista, or can I install each mutiple times, on different computers? I know that sounds like a stupid question, but it is important from a money stand point.

Anyway, that is an update on my thoughts. Tell me what you think. The good and the bad, any thoughts will do.

Cheers!

You're going to get a license from Microsoft if you want to install XP from the same CD on multiple computers, buying one OEM CD from say Newegg will only allow you to install XP once. Same would go with Vista, which is why if you're not 100% sure about the business yet you should settle with Linux based systems.
