Ran into trouble building my first computer

Ive been tinkering with my families computers for a little over a year now and finally decided to build my own computer from the ground up ( all other computers were just getting video cards installed and new disk drives and other small installations). The computer I'm building is made for surfing the net, light gaming and office stuff.

Today i finished building my computer but i hit a very large snag. I'm trying to install Win XP Pro and ran into the problem after copying the files and when it reboots. After rebooting its like the system forgot that it copied all the files and im back to the beginning of installing the O/S and it returns to this screen http://www.windowsnetworking.com/img/gif_wxp/wxpins02.gif ( i hope it goes to the picture its supposed to be) , but when i restart the installation it shows that there was something on the harddrive. Ive overwritten the partition but i end up back at the beginning, Ive deleted the partition and tried to install XP but that didn't work either. I've done some googling and came back with nothing. So i was wondering if anyone had any idea what the problem might be? and how i might fix it?

Also the system seems to be acting rather sluggishly, and is taking a while to go from http://www.windowsnetworking.com/img/gif_wxp/wxpins21.gif to http://www.windowsnetworking.com/img/gif_wxp/wxpins01.gif ......i am not sure if this is related to the problem in anyway, but i thought i would mention it, in case it is related. I'm pretty sure its not the CD cause I've used that to boot from before and the disk drive is relatively new (bought it 4 months ago) and works fine cause i used in my last computer. But maybe i installed the hardware wrong, could that be the problem? But this seems unlikely cause bios is registering every device i have on there. So I'm a little confused.

Heres the hardware im using:
motherboard: Asus P5E-VM HDMI
Ram: Transcend DDR2-800 2GB
CPU: intel core duo E8400
disk drive: Liteon lightscribe dvd writer
Hard drive: 250GB sesgate
(eventually going to add a vid card to the list)

anyways, thanks for any insight you can provide.

btw, i hope this is the right forum, i wasn't entirely sure where to put this query.

Is it a sata hard drive?

Are you setting up any kind of RAID or anything?

Are you formatting the drive each time you install XP?

After the initial "Press any key to boot from CD" you do not do it again, it should timeout (or you can change the boot order back to the HDD in the bios if you prefer.) and continue with the installation
You shouldn't have to touch it again until it gets to the time and location settings screen (iirc, been a while since I installed XP, lol)

@crappybob:
a) no its a IDE hard drive
b) im not setting up any kind of RAID
c) ive tried formatting and not formatting the drive, neither with success

@A true Folder: after i set-up the drive (format, partition), i do not touch a button, however after XP finishes copying files to teh computer it reboots. I still dont touch anything and it will go back to http://www.windowsnetworking.com/img/gif_wxp/wxpins02.gif

someone else has told me that my harddrive might be messed up and it might need to be replaced. Is that a possible solution?

might be a long shot but do you have another keyboard you can try using in case one of the buttons happen to be stuck on or something causing it to start reinstalling all over again?
