Just out of curiousity, how does it do that? Just scan the motherboard?

Yes, if you go to crucial web site then select there advisory tool, it asks you what manufacturer your MB is then you scroll down until you find your type the press scan, it only takes about a min, then you get ram, video card, recommendations it will also tell you the max capacity allowed of each.
