im looking to buy a 512 or a 1024 DDR 2100 and my pc alreadyhas 256 in it which is why im getting more, can i put the 512/1024 in my pc and put the 256 in the 2nd slot?

Yes you can, however don't expect dual channel performance even if your board supports it.

how many slots does your computer have?
You could buy 2 512 sticks and dual channel then..if your mobo supports it.
