Ram frequency too high. Will this cause problems ?

I have a motherboard that supports max of Ddr2 667. I have used ddr2 800 and I am having problems with the ram. Could this be because it's running at a frequency that is more than the board can take or does the ram notch down to the maximum the board can take. I have done a bios update and still no luck. Once I go over 3gb the computer fails and I get a lot of BSOD. Also tested each stick and they worked ok although I did get a few problems installing windows xp. I returned the old ram and it worked again.

Any ideas ?

The RAM clock speed is set by the motherboard. So, you can install 800Mhz RAM, but it will only run at 667Mhz if that is the speed your motherboard runs the ram at.

Ditto, just in case you want a second opinion. The motherboard will clock the higher clocked RAM down in this case, and that actually shouldn't introduce any problems unless there's an issue with the RAM itself, the motherboard or the memory controller.
