Raid Help!

Hi everyone!

I am setting up a new machine which I would like to run RAID 1 on it to try and avoid HDD failure in the future.

The Motherboard I am using is the Asus P8Z77-V.

I know hardware Raid is much better then software raid / fake raid but I really don't want to spend £150 / $200 + on a hardware raid card just to prevent HDD failure. Can't justify / afford the expense.

Does anyone have any experience with the on board RAID functionality of this board? Is it fairly reliable? I have heard that FAKE raid is actually worse then software raid so i am very dubious about going down that road...unless you can convince me otherwise...

I am going to be running Windows 7 Home Premium, which does not support WINDOWS SOFTWARE RAID so that is NOT an option.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Backup every week or two. And HDD failure isn't likely. My old one was 6 years old and still going strong before I changed it.
